This year the biggest event in Football is coming to Johannesburg and South Africa will return to the venue, where they achieved their first major success in 1996, four years after their readmission to international football when they shot to prominence and stunned the African continent by claiming their CAF Africa Cup of Nations trophy against Tunisia in the finals.
South Africa seems determined to add a new chapter to their football history, their performance at the FIFA Confederations Cup last June should remind us that South Africa is a team whose potential when stretched to the limits cannot be underestimated.
This is the third participation of South Africa in the FIFA World Cup. The Bafana Bafana debuted in France 1998 and also they were present at Korea/Japan 2002.
In this World Cup they being the host nation have received automatic qualification. Nine South African cities are prepared to set the stage for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2010.
They are:-
1. Johannesburg – The economic pivot of South Africa.
2. Kapstadt – The cape city of South Africa resting besides the bay at Atlantic Ocean, it is the southern part of the province west cape. Cape city has picturesque buildings, the long sand beaches it is called as South Africa most popular destination.
3. Durban – The largest city.
4. Pretoria – Pretoria is the capital of South Africa and lies north of Johannesburg. City proudly holds the some 150 years mighty monuments.
5. Port Elizabeth – Also called as “Friendly city”, it lies at the Nelson Mandela bay.
6. Bloemfontein – A beautiful city with thousands of rosebushes and some monuments.
7. Rustenburg – It is one of the largest mining regions of the world, with an abundance of platinum occurrence under the earth.
8. Nelspruit – It lies some 330 km east of Johannesburg.
9. Polokwane – Polokwane lies at the edge of the world famous bartender national park.
South Africa are included in Group A along with teams like Mexico, Uruguay and France.
